Yonsei University is shown to have the lowest financial dependency on tuition among private schools in Korea. More notably, it is the only school with less than 50% dependency. According to a report of the 2011 financial status of 98 private schools released by The Korea Economic Daily on June 4th, Yonsei University’s financial dependency on tuition is 46.5%. Other major universities showed higher dependency: SungKyunKwan University 54.7%, Ewha Woman’s University 56.1%, Korea University 59.6% and Chung-Ang University 68.8%. Yonsei also topped the list for contributions from the school foundation with KRW 195.8billlion followed by SungKyunKwan University (KRW 94.3billion) and Korea University (KRW 72.9 billion). Yonsei’s student management fund – including scholarships, expenditures for experimentation practical training, and financial support for students – was found to be worth KRW 126.1 billion proving once again that the budget allocated directly for students is the largest in the country. Yonsei is reported to have KRW 450 billion in reserve funds, while Ewha Woman’s University and Hongik University have KRW 684.9 and 58.6 billion, respectively. In 2011, Yonsei gave KRW 31.8 billion in donations, coming second only to Korea University (KRW 45.8).
