Yonsei University, which has been fostering leaders to serve society with the school’s spirit of truth and freedom based on Christian teachings, celebrates its 127th anniversary. The first founding represents the establishment of Jejungwon, a medical institution, in 1885, as Korea’s first higher education institution and the birth place of the modernization of Joseon Dynasty. The second founding came with the merger of Yonhi College and Severance Medical School under the name of Yonsei University in 1957. It underwent expansion through the opening of the Wonju campus and has contributed to Korean society as the leading private university. The opening of the Incheon International Campus in 2010 marked the beginning of Yonsei’s “third founding.” Yonsei has a historical vocation to present a new paradigm for Korean universities and lead changes in the global era to compete in the world stage. Accordingly, Yonsei’s vision –Yonsei, where we make history! – for the “third founding” should be shared among all Yonseians to create yet another history. Yonsei aims to foster holistic individuals with Christian leadership who have the ability to cooperate, communicate and think creatively, with respect for cultural diversity providing prestigious education with global competitiveness. Yonsei seeks to strengthen its pioneer research capabilities through revolutionary improvements in its research infrastructure. It also will promote research projects at the level of international quality by expanding its joint and integrated studies as well as its network of cooperation between firms and universities. Yonsei will reform the campus infrastructure by achieving more financial soundness through innovative changes in its administration systems and campus environment. Yonsei will vitalize external and internal communication to create a wider and liberal community culture. It will further strengthen its role in social leadership by fulfilling its social obligations through educational and volunteer activities demonstrating servant leadership. Yonsei University will work to enhance the distinct characteristics of its campuses through autonomous and integrated programs adequate for multi-campuses. At the same time, it will also generate cross-campus synergy in all aspects including education, research and other infrastructures. Accomplishing the goals of the vision will amplify Yonsei’s long-maintained superiority and dignity as an institution of higher education and make it the hall for education and research leading the 21st century.
