“You wouldn’t believe me if I say volunteer work is fun, would you? Give it a try. You will find out that I am right.” Joo Min-seo (27, photo), a senior at Yonsei’s College of Business, is the “Queen of Volunteer Work.” According to the Yonsei University Volunteer Center, she has done 4,989 hours of volunteer work since 2004, when she entered Yonsei, up until now ahead of her graduation. This amounts to 208 days and it is the highest record since the establishment of Yonsei University Volunteer Center in 2008. Taking into account the hours she put in during weekends to volunteer without anyone knowing, the total amount of time exceeds 5,000 hours. She is graduating later than her peers because of the considerable amount of time she spent on volunteer service. She said, “It is not something remarkable. I did what I love to do, and it just happened.” She said that she became interested in volunteer work after looking after children by chance at the Pediatric Cancer Clinic at Severance Hospital. She gained a passion for voluntary service after she participated in volunteer activities in Uganda in 2005. She said, "Seeing children in pain living in the most unimaginable conditions made me think that I should do the least I can to help." After joining the student volunteer team at Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA) in 2006, Joo said that the 2 years she spent in Uzbekistan teaching Korean was her most valuable experience. She said, "Some of the students who learned Korean and about Korean culture came to Yonsei University and I sometimes meet them on campus. At moments like that, I realize that what I did there was all very meaningful." After returning to Korea from Uzbekistan, Joo looked after single mothers and children at an adoption center in Uijeongbu City, Gyeonggi Province. Despite the considerable amount of time spent on volunteer activities, she majored in business and minored in International Relations as well as in Russian Language & Literature. Joo was recognized for her efforts and was awarded the "Yonsei Volunteer Service Award" in 2009. On February 23, she received a medal from the Yonsei Volunteer Center for her efforts by Yonsei President Jeong Kap-young. She said, "I want do something that combines business and volunteer work, such as, planning volunteer programs and fund raisers."
