[YONSEI NEWS] "Leave a Good First Impression Using the 'Thirty Second Strategy"

Sukhee Kang, Mayor of Irvine, California, Advises Mayor of Irvine, California, Sukhee Kang is the first Korean-American to serve as Mayor in the United States. On the November 15th, Kang introduced his "Thirty Second Strategy," which led to his success in life as an immigrant. Mayor Kang lectured on the theme of "Globalization and the Strategy for Global Leaders" at Yonsei University's New Millennium Hall. During the lecture, he said that “pretty words without sincerity cannot touch people's minds" and that “the first thirty seconds are critical when you meet someone." He explained, "I try to speak politely during the first 10 seconds, minding the manner in which I speak, and for the remaining 20 seconds, I try to say words that suit the formality." As a result, he was able to work at Circuit City within four months and broke numerous records since then. He immigrated to the United States in 1977 and was elected as the Mayor of Irvine and re-elected in 2008. Next year, he planned to run for Congress. Mayor Kang said, “It isn't 'what' you say, but rather 'how' you say something that matters most for skillful communication and that is the most crucial factor for a global leader" and that “It is important to develop communication skills." He said, "During campaigns, I was able to discover abilities I never knew I had" and that “Our capability is limitless, so don't draw hasty conclusions about your abilities and keep trying."
