Summer breaks are busy times for Yonsei students who seek rewarding and life-learning experiences. With the onset of summer break, Yonsei University’s rural community volunteer group went on a nine-day-activity from June 25th to July 3rd to Nonsan-si, Choongchungnam-do.The activity was organized by the Student Council with a total of 500 participants who did volunteer work in thirty different towns of Nonsan-si’s Kayagokmyeon, Sangweolmyeon, Wooseokmyeon, Beolgokmyeon, Seongdong-myeon, and Yeonmoo-eup. Contrary to typical rural community volunteer activities which are limited to helping the region in terms of farming, Yonsei volunteers organized more diverse activities to help the local farmers. The 500 volunteers were sent to 6 different townships of the Nonsan-si region to work on various jobs such as plucking out weeds, removing or rebuilding hoop houses, and so on. Their work was especially helpful for harvesting potatoes. Other than farm works, the students divided themselves up into groups to organize special programs for the seniors, the children, and the women. Some of them visited the seniors living alone to sweep floors, massage them, and provide company. For the children, the volunteers organized various recreational and teaching activities. The children were happy to hang out with their new friends. For the women of the town, volunteers gave them facial massages to soothe the women’s sunburn skin or colored their hair. By the end of it, the students prepared a party for the townspeople with food and performances. This year’s rural community volunteer activity was a success due to the Student Council’s careful planning and the Student Welfare Center’s support. Student Council leader Jeong Joon-young, who was also the leader during the rural community volunteer activity, said, “The event provided an opportunity for farmers and students to share their thoughts and it was rewarding to be able to provide help for the farmers.”
