[YONSEI NEWS] Asia’s Hub of Cancer Treatment, Groundbreaking Ceremony for the Yonsei Cancer Hospital

With its aim to become the Asia’s hub of cancer treatment, the Yonsei Cancer Center held its groundbreaking ceremony on July 13 at Jejungkwan, Severance Hospital of Yonsei University Health System. The ceremony was attended by the Former Yonsei Presidents, Kim, Byong-su and Song, Ja; the Yonsei President, Kim Han-joong; Chairman of the Yonsei University Foundation, Bang, Woo-young; Former Director of Yonsei Health System, Park Chang-il; Chairman of the Yonsei University College of Medicine Alumni Association, Chun, Gyeng-pil; members of the Yonsei University Board of Directors, Yoon, Hyong-seop, Lee, Seung-yon and So, Hwa-chun. The 21-story hospital building, which is expected to be completed in November 2013, will comprise 15 cancer treatment clinics, including stomach cancer, colorectal cancer and liver cancer. As a clinical and research-based institution, the Yonsei Cancer Hospital will engage in benchmarking with the world-renowned cancer centers such as Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center and MD Anderson Cancer Center; and will employ the latest cancer treatment programs and will be furnished with high technology equipment such as proton cancer treatment. For the construction of the Yonsei Cancer Hospital, a fund of about 4.7 billion won was raised from around 540 people, including the faculty, alumni, and patients of Yonsei Health System and corporate funds. Park Chang-il, the Former Director of Yonsei Health System, said, “The Yonsei Cancer Hospital will provide a firm foothold for a global Severance and will develop Severance into the medical hub of Asia. Patients will be able to overcome cancer with more hope and with world-class treatment at the Yonsei Cancer Hospital.”
