On April 9 at the Eun Myung Auditorium in Severance Hospital, a ceremony was held in celebration of both the 125th anniversary of Jejungwon—the first western medical hospital in Korea—and the 150th anniversary of the birth of Oliver R. Avison, who transformed Jejungwon into Severance Hospital—the first modern hospital in Korea. Jejungwon was founded in 1895 by Dr Horace N. Allen and converted to Severance Hospital by Dr Oliver R. Avison. The ceremony was attended by 400 people, including Yonsei President Kim Han-joong; former Prime Minister Han Seung Soo; descendant of Horace Allen (the founder of Jejungwon), Lydia Allen; Avison’s great-granddaughter, Claudette Milanson; and descendant of Oliver Avison, Robin E. Milanson. On this day, Robin E. Milanson received special attention for his family background. In 1984, when he was 3 months old, he was adopted to a family in Louisiana, America; it was the family of Oliver Avison’s great-granddaughter, Mrs. Milanson. The adoption was organized by the Director of Holt Ilsan Welfare Town, Cho Byung Kuk; and at that time he was unaware of the fact that the adopter was a descendant of Oliver Avison. Director Cho was informed of this fact later and was thrilled to meet the Milanson family at the ceremony. “I remember getting treatment from Dr. Avison’s son once when I was a student at Severance Union Medical College. I can’t believe I sent a baby to one of his families.” said Director Cho. At the celebration ceremony, possessions or personal mementos of Oliver Avison, which had been collected by Hong-Youl Moon, Chairman of HB group, and by the descendants of Dr. Avison, were donated to Yonsei Health System.
