[YONSEI NEWS] The Future of Asian Universities

International university presidents and global leaders meet to discuss university governance issues Presidents from the world’s leading universities and leaders from global companies and organizations gathered for the International Conference and the Asian Studies Forum which were held in celebration of Yonsei’s 125th anniversary. Yonsei believes the discussions at these events will help secure a foothold in its growth into a global university. The theme of the Yonsei University 125th Anniversary International Conference on Higher Education and Governance 2010 was ‘Rethinking and Remaking Asian Universities’. The conference consisted of the three sessions—The Future of University Governance: Can We Reform Ourselves?, University Finances in the 21st Century: Where’s the Money Coming From?, and Excavating and Educating the Next Talents: Insights from End-Users. After presentations in the first and second session respectively, lively discussions took place with presidents and directors from universities worldwide, including Lap-Chee Tsui (Vice-Chancellor, University of Hong Kong), Atsushi Seike (President of Keio University, Japan), Xianming Xu (President of Shandong University, China) and Paul Webley (Director and Principal of the School of Oriental and African Studies, University of London). In the third session, discussions on ‘Excavating and Education the Next Talents’ were carried out by prominent leaders—Maeda Shinzo (President & CEO, Shiseido), Lee Mi-kyung (Vice-chairwoman, CJ Entertainment & Media), Kang Kyung-wha (Deputy High Commissioner, United Nations Commission on Human Rights) and Almar Latour (Editor in Chief, Wall Street Journal Asia). The sessions were followed by student questionnaires and a question-and-answer session with the audience. The topic of the Asian Studies Forum was ‘The Era of Asia and the Future of Asian Studies’, and the forum consisted of three sessions, each one involving presentations followed by discussion. In the first session, the discussion was held with Meredith Woo (Professor, University of Virginia), James Perry (Professor, Indiana University), Rudiger Frank (Professor, University of Vienna) and Michael Lewis (Professor, Michigan State University); and the discussion at the second session was with Masao Okonogi (Professor, Keio University), Daniel A. Bell (Professor, Tsinghua University), William Tsutsui (Professor, University of Kansas) and Anders Karlsson (Professor, School of Oriental and African Studies, University of London). The third session was based on discussions for the School of Asian Studies at the Yonsei Songdo Global Campus which was led by Yonsei Professor Ha Yon-sub.
