[YONSEI PEOPLE] The Former Dean of the School of Social Welfare Lee Ick-seop Passes Away

Appointed as the First Professor in the School of Social Welfare with Physical Difficulties, Dean Lee Ick-seop was Active in Helping the Disabled The former dean of the School of Social Welfare Lee Ick-seop has passed away at the age of 58 on February 2. He was active in promoting human rights of the disabled in both domestic and international level. Lost his sight when he was a fourth grader in elementary school, Dean Lee Ick-seop graduated from Pittsburgh University with MA in Social Enterprise and acquired his Ph.D in Social Welfare Policy from Chicago University. In 1993, he was appointed as the first professor in Yonsei with the first-degree visual disability. He worked as a professor at the School of Social Welfare and served as the dean of the school from 2005 to January 2009. Dean Lee Ick-seop also served as the president of DPI (Disabled Peoples' International) Korea from 2001 to February 2008. He had a deep concern in promoting human rights of severely disabled people and intellectually disabled people. In 2007, he served as the head of organization committee for the 7th World Assembly of Disabled Peoples’ International, an international event that had 4,000 participants from 160 nations around the globe. He was awarded Seoul Policy Maker’s Award in 2007 and Paradise Award (social welfare field) in 2008.
