‘2009 Award Ceremony for Distinguished Faculty Members and Departments Taught in English’ was held on December 28. The award ceremony was organized by university’s Office of Academic Affairs to promote courses offered in English and their quality. 10 faculty members and 5 departments (Department of English Language and Literature, Electrical & Electronic Engineering, Architectural Engineering, Computer Science and School of Civil & Environmental Engineering) were awarded. In the celebratory speech, university president Kim Han-joong mentioned that internationalization is a core axis in Yonsei Vision to build the best university and the university is aiming to raise the portion of courses offered in English up to 35% until 2011. He also emphasized that making the new international campus to be a place where foreign students can study without any inconvenience is an object we are facing now, appreciating for the hard work of awardees. In 2009, Yonsei University was granted a support program for courses in English by the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology and built a foundation for strengthening its own support program for the courses offered in English. Yonsei is currently opening new programs such as the certification system for freshmen and developing new methods to assess the courses offered in English. These efforts are accompanied by the rise in the number of foreign professors and students to broaden a basis for the usage of English in campus. In 2009, the number of foreign full time faculty in Sinchon campus was 89, making 9.8% of the number of full-time faculty members in the same campus.
