A Syringe with No Pain A research team led by Professor Jung Hyungil (Department of Biotechnology) developed a microneedle. Microneedle is getting its presence in a global drug injection market. The research result is chosen as a paper for Inside Front Cover of Advanced Materials, one of the most renowned journals in the field of material science. Microneedle is a syringe that has a diameter of micro scale. The microneedles developed till now were short in length due to technological limitation of material processing. The injection of medicine with the short microneedles was not effective as with disposable syringes. Professor Jung Hyung-il’s team developed an original technology to overcome the shortcomings of microneedles and produced Ultra-High-Aspect Ratio Microneedle. With this original technology, the research team and its corporational counterpart were able to cooperate to create a new industry with new product. The research is also expected to create a newly added value by occupying the product in advance in the global industry. The technology used in Microneedle can also be applied to other diagnostic tools. It is expected to build a foundation for new added value for the core industries such as ubiquitous healthcare. The team is currently working on a new medicine injection system with an aim of eliminating pain of injection in medicines such as growth hormone, insulin and vaccines that are difficult to be delivered in pills.
