Special Leadership Lecture by Parliament Member Jung Dong-young The former runner for Presidential election and independent parliament member Jung Dong-young mentioned during his special leadership lecture at Yonsei on September 30 had clear vision about the future of Korean economy: “Korean economy will have a new opportunity to rise with the labor force of 12 million people and the nationalized land resources of North Korea, if we overcome the current nuclear problem and the political structure bequeathed by the Cold War.” Mr. Jung emphasized in his lecture, whose title was “Rebel against Commonsense, Management of Self-Control”, that Koreans “need a groundbreaking solution if we are to put Korean economy on the next level.” “If Obama and Kim Jong-il meet each other,” he continued, “it will be a progress towards an era of prosperity based on an open exchange of each other’s hearts and minds, moving out of the legacy of confrontation, hostility, and mutual misunderstanding”. It was therefore in the interest of all Koreans “to support the new change.” Regarding the current issue of Gaesung Industrial Complex, he pointed out that the current administration does not seem to have motivation to expand and develop the business because it was planned and established during the last administration, in which he was the Minister of Reunification. “The criterion for government policy should be the good of the country,” he pointed out. Mr. Jung was concerned about other problems of the present government: “The incidents of wiretapping e-mails and phone calls, and imprisonment for writing opinions on the internet are designed to scare people and control our lives.” He stressed the importance of people’s participation: through the “judgment by vote” people can still put at end to the system that operates surveillance on its own people.
