Yonsei was placed 151st in the latest Times World University Rankings, up 52 places compared to last year. Yonsei’s steady and remarkable rise in the rankings is a rare phenomenon among universities. With its continuous rise in the rankings, Yonsei confirmed its status as the top private university in Korea, which is also on its way to becoming a top “global university.” The Times Higher Education-QS World University Rankings has been evaluating universities around the world since its launch in 2003. Yonsei ranked 101th in Academic Peer Review, a numerical evaluation by 6,000 scholars around the world, and 292th in Employer Review, which shows its reception in the global market. The Times Higher Education is one of the most respected evaluation institutions in the world. The World University Rankings has been published since 2004. The rankings are composed of several indicators such as Academic Peer Review (40%), Employer Review (10%), Citations per Faculty (10%), and International Faculty & Students (10%). In specific fields, Yonsei placed 79th in humanities, 139th in engineering & IT, 104th in life sciences & biomedicine, and 157th in natural sciences. The research figures of Yonsei were: 13,770 research papers, 43,863 times cited, and 3.2 times cited per each papers. Harvard University is ranked as the top university, followed by Cambridge and Yale. Among universities in Asia, Tokyo University received the best ranking (22nd), while Tsinghua University (49th) was also placed among top 50. Seoul National University ranked 47th, and Korea University 211th in the overall rankings. Along with the leap in the World University Rankings, Yonsei has been stepping forward to become a global university. Yonsei was placed 200th (25th in Asia) in Performance Ranking of Scientific Papers for World Universities by HEEACT (Higher Education Evaluation and Accreditation Council of Taiwan), moving 39 steps upward from the last year (239th). The university also ranked as the top private university in Korea and 25th in Asia in the Chosun Ilbo-QS Asian University Rankings published this May. Adding to the rises in the various rankings, the university’s number of SCI-listed papers is increasing as well. Yonsei took 96th place in the evaluation report by the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology in 2007 with 2,193 research papers, and the number increased to 2,647 in 2008.
