Lee Seung-bok (Robert Lee), a professor at Johns Hopkins University Hospital who overcame his quadriplegia and now known as the "superman doctor" asserted the importance of positive endeavor to university students in Korea in his lecture on August 20. The lecture entitled "Miracle is Always Within You" was hosted as a special guest lecture commemorating the 40th anniversary of Yonsei's Korean Language Institute (KLI). The one-hour lecture was held with about 200 students and staff who packed the seats and corridors of the International Conference Hall at Yonsei Samsung Library. In the lecture, Professor Lee explained his story of his becoming disabled. He said that he became quadriplegic in his teens, while practicing "to achieve his dream of participating in the Olympic Games as a national gymnastic representative" and recollected that "the fact that he became unable to pursue his dream was more hopeless than the fact that he had to sit on an wheelchair." He thought, however, that he would start things again since he could not surrender himself to despair. "I endured study routines that made me spend two or three times more hours of studying," he said, "to become a doctor who understands the hearts of patients." With his effort, Professor Lee completed the whole course of study to become a doctor, successfully accomplishing his job in internship period to be chosen as the intern doctor of the year, and became a resident doctor at the Department of Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation at Johns Hopkins University. "Patients in rehabilitation are full of despair and anger," Professor Lee said, "but I myself can be a proof of hope that there is no failure." "Making effort with positive mind helps the treatment of the patients," he added. He emphasized the importance of one's mental attitude, a mind-set that overcomes limits, saying how "it is ourselves who limit ourselves." He finished his lecture by encouraging his audience to "put positive effect on the society with achievements after overcoming limits." Professor Lee moved to the United States in 1973 with his father. He became quadriplegic in 1983 as a result of an accident during athletic training. He became a Ph.D in Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation, and his moving account is now known nationwide in the US. His autobiography Miracle Is Within You is published in 2005. He also served as a physician of the Athletes Village in Taereung National Athletic Training Center from 2002 to 2008. After the lecture, about a hundred students came to meet him in person and he greeted each of them, signing with a writing aid on his hand. "I want to share what I have learnt about the advanced medical technologies to medical students in Korea," he remarked. One hopes his plans will be realized soon.
