Yonsei University has made a significant leap in world university rankings. The university is 200th place (25th in Asia Pacific region) on the 2009 Performance Ranking of Scientific Papers for World Universities by Higher Education Evaluation and Accreditation Council of Taiwan (HEEACT), stepping up 39 ranks from that of last year (239th place). Compared to the World University Rankings by The Times of England which mostly focused on peer review, HEEACT evaluated universities with focuses on research productivity, research influence and research excellence. Within the last year, Yonsei made an entry to top 100 universities in article numbers, ranked 89th (18th in Asia Pacific region). Number of citations (within the last 3 years) also increased, securing the university's 186th place worldwide (27th in Asia Pacific region). The improvement is significant regarding the number of articles produced within the last 11 years (139th place in the world and 25th in Asia Pacific) and the number of citations in the same period (260th in the world and 32th in Asia Pacific). With the recognition of its research capacity in the world university ranking, Yonsei University has given itself a firm footing for its competition with the top universities around the world. There is a considerable rising trend in the world ranking of Yonsei, from the 271th in 2007 and the 239th in 2008 to the 200th in this year. Yonsei University already showed signs of its improving academic status in 2007, when the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology announced that the university was ranked on the 96th place in the number of articles published in SCI publications with its total of 2,193 articles. The university was ranked on the 203th place of the World University Rankings in 2008 by The Times, whose global authority is unquestionable. It was rated as the best private university in Korea in various domestic league tables offered by the leading national newspapers Chosunilbo and Joongang daily.
