72 Year Old Student Graduated from the College of Theology after 50 Years The "grandma student," who could not graduate because of one credit 50 years ago and returned to school early this year, finally received her degree. As a graduate of the College of Theology, Nam Young-sook received a bachelor's degree at the summer commencement ceremony on August 28. Nam Young-sook was the first female student in her department when she entered Yonsei University. In the winter of 1960, she was informed that she couldn't graduate since she had a credit hour deficiency of 1 credit hour. She could not, however, finish the remaining credit due to her economic situation. She wanted to put no more burden on her mother who supported her for four years by working her farm all by herself. "Being shocked by the thought that I couldn't graduate even after taking yearbook photos because of the 1 credit hours, I went back to my hometown," she reminisced. She got a job and married afterwards, but that incident would always remain a sore point in her mind. It was her daughter's filial heart that sent her back to the university. Her daughter contacted the university, and her return to Yonsei was authorized. Ms. Nam took a lecture on "Practical Theology," and submitted a report on a volunteer work experience in a student group to finally make up her credit hour deficiency. "I am deeply moved to receive a graduation diploma," Ms Nam said. "I will share this warm-hearted feeling with people in need."
