Professor Kim Jeong-Han of the Yonsei Department of Mathematics was awarded the Gyeong-Am Academic Award in Natural Science. The Gyeong-Am Education and Culture Foundation announced this year’s award recipients on September 22. The award recipients were Professor Kim Jeong-Han for natural science, former SNU professor Jeong Myeong-Hwan for humanities/social science, Professor Jeong Jong-Gyeong of KAIST for life science, Professor Kim Beom-Man of POSTECH for engineering, and potter Yoon Gwang-Jo for art. The Gyeong-Am Foundation described Professor Kim Jeong-Han as “a scholar who has distinguished himself at discrete mathematics, a field that is the foundation of computer and software sciences, by exercising international influence through solving unsolved problems in graph theory and presenting new models”. The Gyeong-Am Academic Awards are awarded by the Gyeong-Am Foundation, which was established with the 100 billion won donation from Taeyang Ltd. President Song Geum-Jo. Profesor Kim Jeong-Han came to the center of interest when he was awarded the Fulkerson Prize in 1997 for solving a problem related to the Ramsey Theory, which had remained unsolved for 60 years. His Fulkerson Prize is the most prestigious prize in mathematics that a Korean scholar has been awarded to date. His fame extends to the entire world of science, so that in 2006, was invited as a lecturer to the International Congress of Mathematicians (ICM) Conference, the so-called “Olympics of mathematics”. Last year, he was selected as a “Role Model Scientist for Young Students” by the Korean Ministry of Science and Korea Culture Foundation.
