CNN Anchor Visits Yonsei for CNN Special Coverage Program “EYE ON SOUTH KOREA’ International PR Efforts Establish Yonsei’s International Reputation “Broadcasting live from the oldest private university in South Korea, now also known as one of the world’s top international universities.” Kristie Lu Stout introduced Yonsei to 220 million CNN viewers worldwide, excluding the US. A CNN live broadcasting center was set up on campus on October 19, in front of the Underwood statue for the production of the CNN special program, EYE ON SOUTH KOREA. The program introduced Korea, the center of international technology, as an IT giant. Stout is the main CNN anchor for the Asian area and received the 2006 CNN award for “Best news presenter or anchor.” Also the co-host of CNN’s morning program “CNN Today” with Hugh Riminton, Stout visited the Seoul Plaza, Unification Observatory, Hyundai Heavy Industries, and many other sites in Korea to broadcast live about Korea’s broadband network, the IT technology of Seoul, cell phone usage, and other aspects of technological life in Korea. She interviewed passengers on the Seoul subways who were watching TV on their mobile phones, and visited Internet cafes. On her last day in Korea, October 19, Stout came to Yonsei University to report on Cyworld, a personal homepage system. This is not Stout’s first visit to Yonsei. She had also reported on the Department of Psychology two years ago. A graduate of Stanford University, Stout praised the beauty of the Yonsei campus, saying, “Yonsei’s campus is more beautiful than Stanford. It is one of the most beautiful universities, not only in Korea but in the world. I have never seen such a beautiful campus.” Also, at the closing of the live broadcast, she introduced Yonsei as “a top international university” and “the oldest private university in Korea.” Chris Dwyer, Associate Director of Public Relations for CNN Asia Pacific, explained, “We planned a special program to show Korea as an IT giant. Yonsei’s reputation as a rising global university matched the objectives of the program well.” ‘EYE ON SOUTH KOREA’ was broadcast October 13-21, calling the world’s attention to Korea by reporting on wireless communication technology and intelligent robots. In addition to the cutting-edge technology of Korea, various aspects of Korea were introduced, including interviews with movie stars Jeon Do-yeon and Jang Dong-gun, golfer Choi Kyung-Ju, and animator Nelson Shin. Yonsei University and CNN have established a system of cooperation through which both sides seem to be achieving their goal of international PR. In addition to coverage by Stout, a Yonsei Student Seminar was held at Yonsei University on October 2 with Eunice Yoon, CNN International’s Asia Business Editor, and Ellana Lee, acting managing editor for CNN Asia-Pacific.
