“Choo Seok with Yonsei” Held in Global Lounge for International Students The Office of International Affairs (Dean Ha Yeonseob) held the “Choo Seok with Yonsei” event on September 21 in the Global Lounge. International students were invited to experience Korean traditions and culture. Exchange students, students from the Korean Language Institute and Graduate School of International Studies, and international faculty members gathered to enjoy the Hangawi event. Hangawi, another term for Choo Seok, is a Korean thanksgiving holiday that celebrates the full moon around harvesting time. Participants learned about the holiday and participated in a traditional ritual commemorating our ancestors. They set the ceremonial table with traditional food and newly harvested fruits, and paid their respect to their ancestors through the traditional Korean form of abasement (jeol). A Samul-noli (instrumental troupe consisting of four types of percussions, originating from farm dances) performance was greeted by cheers from the crowd, and many events were held including traditional holiday games and trying on traditional Korean costumes (hanbok). For dinner, the students were able to try traditional Korean food, including songpyeon (rice dumplings), modeumjeon (meat and vegetable pan-fried cakes), yaksik (sweet rice), hangwa (Korean “cookie” snacks), and sikhye (non-alcoholic sweet rice drink).
