It is official. UC Berkeley professors will be lecturing in Yonsei. Yonsei University signed an agreement with UC Berkeley on Februrary 5th to build an East Asian Education Base for UC Berkeley at the upcoming Yonsei Songdo Global Academic Complex (expected to open in March of 2010). Ever since the exchange student program was set up with the UC system since 1986, an estimated 300 students per year have benefitted from the program, and this year’s exchange students to UC Berkeley Summer Sessions will be able to choose from forty courses taught by thirty of the teaching staff from the UC system. An additional 38 courses taught by 56 UC teaching staff is also in works for the Yonsei Summer Sessions. Establishing the East Asian Education Base for UC Berkeley – Yonsei and Berkeley Faculty and Students to Reside Together According to the agreement, the East Asian Education Base for UC Berkeley involves a sizeable number of UC Berkeley faculty and students coming to Songdo Complex every semester. Regular classes offered by Berkeley faculty will be open to both Berkeley and Yonsei students. In exchange, Yonsei will offer educational, research and residential space to Berkeley faculty and students, and internship opportunities for Berkeley students, in addition to programs such as the “Get to Know Korea Program” that will introduce them to Korea. The agreement is mutually beneficial in that Berkeley will gain a strategically sound outpost for its East Asian Education program and that Yonsei will be able to claim an unrivaled position in Korea’s increasingly competitive collegiate globalization. The agreement will come to effect in advance of the opening of the Songdo Global Academic Complex, and preparations are being made initially to accommodate Berkeley faculty and students in the Shinchon Campus. While waiting for the completion of the Songdo Global Academic Complex, both schools will get an early start in pooling their resources into making the East Asian Education Base for UC Berkeley the world’s foremost center for East Asian studies.
