Unity Fair for the Next Generation of Northeast Asian Leaders With the support of the Korean Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade, Yonsei’s Leadership Center hosted the Northeast Asian Network of 2007 (NEAN 2007) between the 5th and the 10th of February as part of the Yonsei Leadership Forum. The sixth gathering since its start in 2002, this year’s NEAN centered on “The Union of Northeast Asia,” and approximately 150 Northeast Asian experts and students congregated to discuss all issues ranging from Northeast Asian politics, economic cooperation, and cultural exchange, to the latest in mobile communication. In addition to Yonsei University, which hosted the gathering, the following top universities in Northeast Asia were represented: Korea University, Seoul National University, KAIST, Pohang University of Science and Technology, and Ewha Women’s Univeristy (from Korea); Beijing University, Tshinghua University, and Fudan University (from China); Keio University, Waseda University, and Ritsumeikan University (from Japan); and Hong Kong University. Ambassadors and Dignitaries Attend the Gathering Ambassadors and dignitaries of the world attended the gathering, including Lee Soo-hoon, Chairman of the Northeast Asia Committee, who gave the keynote address in the opening ceremony. In the ensuing the round table discussion, U.S. Ambassador Alexander Vershbow, Russian Ambassador Gleb. A. Ivashentsov, EU Ambassador Brian McDonald, Indian Ambassador N. Parthasarathi, and officials of the Korean Foreign Ministry assembled to talk about “the view of Northeast Asia from the outside.” Going Beyond Borders – Building Unity and Friendship in Northeast Asia Student Jenny Zhengyi Li (Fudan University) said, “I was able to better understand the progress towards a Northeast Asian union as we discussed topics such as ‘The Possibility of a Joint Currency System in Asia’ in Economy sessions. This is also to become an unforgettable experience for me because I’ve been able to make friendships with other students that really exceed borders.” Hong Kong University’s Lam Ting Ting expressed his “joy at not only having been able to gain a better understanding of global issues through this 2007 NEAN, but also because we were able to form a network composed of students from each country who are all potential leaders.”
