An article in February’s Newsweek introduced a trend of all-English-language classes in Asian higher education and cited Yonsei’s Underwood International College (UIC) as a leading example: “By providing generous scholarships and high pay, the UIC has attracted top students and faculty members from around the world.” The success of UIC, which is only in its second year, may partly be attributed to its ability to attract highly qualified international students through regional corporate scholarship programs, sponsored by global companies such as Samsung and LG. Newsweek cited Terry Santoso of Indonesia as an example. Santoso was planning to enroll at Singapore’s Nanyang Technology University but decided to study at UIC after LG offered him a $18,500 per annum scholarship for four years. Professor John Frankl, who lectured at Harvard before coming to UIC, was quoted as saying: “Students at UIC are as able and focused as those at Harvard.” Also mentioned were UIC’s strict student management and high-quality education.
