On June 16, students from Techno-Art Division, Underwood International College (UIC), Yonsei University, went to Gangnam D.Camp Event Hall for 2016 Design Factory Korea (DFK) Gala Night where they presented the results of Capstone Project over the last spring semester.

DFK Gala Night is an annual event celebrating the final of Yonsei University's “Techno-Art Capstone Project” course. In
the Capstone Project, UIC senior students majoring in Techno-Art Division’s CDM (Culture and Design Management), IID (Information and Interaction Design) or CTM (Creative Technology Management) conceive, develop and generate creative
services and products. Student teams, often interdisciplinary and international, work together with either company’s specified
challenge or students’ own interests to create a product and service that satisfies the values of innovative design, manufacturability and marketability.

This is the second Gala event for Design Factory Korea, which celebrated its first anniversary last April. Design Factory Korea is a part of the Design Factory Global Network (DFGN) - an innovative and interdisciplinary program established by Aalto University in Finland.

At the Gala, 7 teams of four or five presented their creative working prototypes to the public. Numerous domestic and foreign companies were in attendance at Gala: Allianz, Amore Pacific, Cisco, Samsung Electronics, Samsung C&T, Pepsi, Innovation Centre Denmark, WeDesign, Apo Idea and Herald Korea. Company representatives, impressed by students’ work, provided useful advices and feedbacks from the industry perspective. About 90 guests – including DFK faculty, students and 20 company officials - attended this Gala.

After the presentation, the panel of judges, composed of – DFK faculty, company representatives, and a student representative from 2015 Gala winner team – evaluated all the products and services according to the innovativeness of design, range of influence and potentiality of value creation. The audience also voted for the most preferred team, which reflects public’s preference and marketability of students’ products.

As a result, team “Lapse” (Seo Hee Lee (CDM12), Joo Kyung Shin (CDM12), Eun Seong Lee (CTM12)) awarded the Judges’Choice, and team “Brelli Box” (Myeong Ji Yoon (CDM13), Hyelin Ku (CDM13), Susanna Kang (CDM12), Christine McGahhey (IID13)) won the Audiences’ Choice. “Lapse” is a period after opening indicator for cosmetics. It is installed to the container and shows the elapsed time through color change. “Brelli Box” can dry the umbrella by twisting it inside the absorbable and eco-friendly fabric.

Impressed by Yonsei students’ talent and potential, corporate officials who participated in the Gala Night said “We witnessed the passion and challenging spirit of the students, who pulled through from forming ideas and conceptualization to actual prototyping over the time of four months.”

The DFK Gala Night, which is having its second anniversary this year, is coming to be one of TAD’s most meaningful events, as it is an opportunity for students to share innovative designs and interact directly with related businesses and industries.
