-Avison Biomedical Symposium 2016

On May 27 and 28, the Yonsei University College of Medicine hosted the Avison Biomedical Symposium 2016 on the Sinchon Campus. The focus of this year’s symposium was artificial intelligence in medicine, and it welcomed speakers from Korea and overseas.

Executive Julie Bowser of IBM predicted that artificial intelligence will be able to provide medical staff with the best information about their patients, allowing for the most effective, personalized treatments to be used. She also explained that IBM ‘Watson (Artifical Intelligence Computer)’ works to improve the quality of living and lower health costs.

There were additional presentations from researchers on big data, artificial intelligence and medical treatments, and robotics and surgery. Vice President Katherine Mohr of Intuitive Surgical USA presented on “Future Imaging Technology in Surgical Robots.” Dr.Pablo Garcia Kilroy from Verb Surgical Inc., USA spoke about developing innovative surgical robotics technology with Google. Other presenters included Professor Jacques Marescaux from IRCAD, France, who lectured on “Inventing the Future: Image-Guided Surgery,” and Professor Koon-ho Rha from Yonsei’s College of Medicine.

Concerning big data and artificial intelligence, the speakers included Dr.Piotr Slomka of Cedars-Sinai Medical Center USA, Dr. Kenji Suzuki of the Illinois Institute of Technology, and KAIST Professor Jun-mo Kim.

College of Medicine Dean Byungseok Lee said: “This was a wonderful occasion where scholars and students of medicine, medical engineering, and IT could gather, network, and discuss the future medical environment.”
