Successfully Develops Extremely Light-Weight Graphene Aerogel

-Results Appear as Cover Article in Advanced Functional Materials

A Yonsei research team, led by Professor Oh Jung-woo of the School of Integrated Technology and Yonsei Institute of Convergence Technology (YICT) and Professor Moon In-kyu of YICT, has successfully synthesized a new, extremely light-weight graphene aerogel that exhibits excellent compressibility and high electrical conductivity. Their results were published December 2 in the journal Advanced Functional Materials, appearing as a cover article with the title “Highly Elastic and Conductive N-Doped Monolithic Graphene Aerogels for Multifunctional Applications.”

According to Professor Oh: “The graphene aerogel shows various atomic doping possibilities, and due to its unique mechanical and electrical qualities and its thermal-chemical stability, the graphene aerogel could be employed in the near future for energy-related and environmental applications.” In particular, he said, the graphene aerogel “could be used to absorb environmental pollution, ideally in big oil spills that happen at sea.” Furthermore, it may have important applications “for use in energy storage, electrodes for fuel cells, photocatalysis, energy absorption, and sensing applications.” Currently, the research team is conducting follow-up research on graphene aerogels.
