Thirty years of Yonsei sundubu tradition has come to an end. On June 28, the restaurant Pyeonghwa-ui Jip, located in the basement of Yonsei’s School of Engineering, closed its doors. On June 21, despite the fact that it was the week of final exams, Pyeonghwa-ui Jip was bustling with students at 11 a.m. But on this day, the students were in disbelief and mourning. With their meal tickets in hands, each of the students expressed her or his dismay: “It’s gone!” “Really? Why?” “Ajumma, if this place is gone, what will they put in its place? I’m sad.” The previous day, Pyeonghwa-ui Jip had posted a message, informing diners that it would be closing down. Current Yonsei students and alumni alike expressed their sadness, with all of them wondering why this popular sundubu restaurant would soon disappear. The “School of Engineering sundubu,” as it is sometime called, was first located in a two-story annex building next to the now-demolished Unified New Studies Graduate School Building. In 1999, Pyeonghwa-ui Jip moved to the then brand new School of Engineering Building; and beginning in its new location with six employees, the staff was soon doubled because of the restaurant’s popularity. Back in 1984, in the Unified New Studies Graduate School Building, a bowl of sundubu jjigae cost 900 won. When Pyeonghwa-ui Jip opened in the School of Engineering Building, a bowl was 2300 won, and when it closed last month, a sundubu jjigae sold for 2900 won. Over the past thirty years, countless students have had a “Yonsei sundubu.” It was a university institution: being both inexpensive and delicious, students from other universities would often embark on “expeditions” to Pyeonghwa-ui Jip for a bowl of sundubu jjigae. While Pyeonghwa-ui Jip is now closed, fond memories of its sundubu will live on in all the Yonseians who dined there during its three decades of existence.
