On June 11, Yonsei University and KIST (Korea Institute of Science and Technology) concluded an agreement to cooperate in the field of convergent technologies, which both institutions believe is a prominent driver of creative economies. In the agreement, Yonsei and KIST proposed engaging in joint research and development of convergent technologies in the fields of energy, the environment, biology, and information technology. In order to accomplish their goals of enhancing cooperation and efficiency in convergence research, the two institutions will establish the “Global Creative Convergent Technology Center” at Yonsei’s International Campus. There, researchers from Yonsei and KIST will conduct joint research in areas of mutual interest. The agreement will allow for participation from the Green Technology Research Center, the Smart Space Research Center, the Convergent Technology Research Center, and the Information Technology Research Center (all affiliated with Yonsei’s School of Engineering), as well as the Future Convergent Technology Research Center. Ideally, this agreement, which aims to create synergy in the field of information and communication technology, will be a catalyst in terms of fueling job growth, thereby addressing the issue of youth unemployment. “I expect this agreement to generate a great deal of synergy in convergent technologies between our two institutions, facilitating the growth of a creative economy,” said President Jeong Kap-young. “Because of this,” he continued, “the Yonsei International Campus will continue to grow as a base for international convergence R&D.” Mun Gil-ju, director of KIST, said: “By combining the cutting-edge infrastructure and high-quality human resources of Yonsei University’s International Campus with KIST’s original technologies and research know-how, this agreement will spearhead innovative and pioneering research in Korea, while serving as a model for cooperation between research institutes and universities.”
