Leadership special lecture by Cheon Yuk, former President of Korean Basketball League and Lee Min-ju Chair Professor On April 7th, former President of Korean Basketball League and Lee Min-ju Chair Professor Cheon Yuk presented the 64th Leadership Special Lecture on ‘Examination of the Korean History of Presidential Election Campaigns’. Professor Cheon analyzed the characteristics of the five presidential election campaigns in Korea since 1987 when the direct election system was adopted as a result of the late Lee Han-yol’s sacrifice and the pro-democracy movement. He described the aspects of opposition and struggle for political power during past election campaigns, demonstrating unity among political parties based on regionalism to be a significant factor in creating government power. As for the campaigns in the 2000s, Professor Cheon explained that they displayed ideological oppositions between conservatism and progressivism and attempts for new political leadership. Professor Cheon Yuk illuminated the history of Korean politics in terms of the presidential election campaigns from his distinctive political senses and critical journalist’s perspectives. For around 20 years since 1988, Professor Cheon has served as head of political desk, head of editorial office, and chief editorialist of the Joongang Daily.
