Yonsei Law School students successfully managed to go to the quarterfinals at an international moot court competition.

The Yonsei Law School team competed in the 18th Willem C. Vis East International Commercial Arbitration Moot (hereinafter, Vis Moot) and advanced to the quarterfinals by beating Harvard Law School and others. Yonsei became the only Korean law school going to the finals, and set the highest record ever among the Korean universities.

The Vis Moot is the best moot court competition in international law by being called as the ‘International Trade Law Olympics’ along with the ‘Jessup’ competition, which is well-known in the field of international public law. Held annually in Hong Kong and Vienna, law students from all over the world gather in one place to compete in writing and oral defense in international arbitration. There were 150 teams from 34 countries participating in this year’s competition, which was held online from March 15 to 21, 2021.

Under the guidance of Professor Joongi Kim (Yonsei Law School), the Yonsei Law School team advanced to the finals after four preliminary matches against Harvard Law School, National Law University Delhi, South China University of Technology, and Shanghai Jiao Tong University. They beat City University of Hong Kong in the final round of 32, and won over the West Bengal National University of Juridical Sciences in the round of 16, advancing to the quarterfinals. In addition, one of the team members, Daehyoung Yoo, won the Neil Kaplan Award for Best Oralists - Honorable Mention.

“I think that the Yonsei Law School team received good reviews for its sharp refutation against the opposing team and defense that hits right on the core of the issue,” says Professor Kim.

“I was able to increase my understanding and passion for international commercial arbitration by arguing with students from leading universities around the world,” says Sang Jin Lee, who played an active part as the team leader in this competition. “I think we received good results thanks to Professor Kim’s generous advice and excellent teamwork.”

Daehyoung Yoo, who won the Personal Debate Award, added, “We achieved good results thanks to all of our team members and received a good evaluation thanks to the sincere approach that we have taken to defend client throughout the competition.”

Meanwhile, the winner of the 18th Vis Moot competition was Fordham University. Among the Korean universities, students from Yonsei Law School, Seoul National University School of Law, Ewha Law School, and Handong International Law School participated in this contest.
