1,200 teenage scholars research ideas for social innovation at Korea Scholar's Conference for Youth 2019 Summer
Last July, over 1,200 middle and high school students aspiring to become social innovators and researchers gathered at Yonsei International Campus in Songdo, Incheon to attend the 12th Korea Scholar's Conference for Youth (KSCY).
Sponsored by the Institute for Higher Education Innovation at Yonsei University, KSCY is Asia’s largest international youth academic conference, with young Korean students living in Korea and around the world participating in its events held every summer and winter. With the aim to nurture young social innovators and spread the spirit of young scholars, KSCY serves as a platform for students who have conducted social innovation research in various fields to present their research findings and engage in interdisciplinary academic exchange among participants, facilitators, and scholars.
Group photo of 2019 11th KSCYThis year’s summer KSCY was held for two days during July 26-27, 2019 at Yonsei International Campus, bringing together over 1,500 students, academics, and support staff. Themed “Beyond Limits,” the conference was comprised of lectures and intensive sessions in 20 academic fields including arts and humanities, social sciences, natural sciences, and engineering. In his keynote speech, Professor Sung-Moon Kim, Director of the Creative Education Center at IHEI at Yonsei University, gave words of encouragement to the participants, conveying an inspiring message to spread the spirit of young scholars.
The KSCY event is open to all students of middle and high school age. They can choose from various participation tracks according to their personal research goals such as Research Paper Presentation, Research Poster Presentation, Research Mentoring, and Research Camp. At this summer’s conference, KSCY opened the inaugural Research Poster Presentation track to allow participants to present their research or social innovation projects in poster form. A large number of university students also attended and shared high-quality research results.

This year, many high school students presented papers addressing social innovation initiatives. A Hana Academy School student presented a model action strategy for international organizations based on case studies of conflicts between nations. The presenter suggested that if necessary, a new international organization should be established to resolve international conflicts such as the Syrian civil war and the dispute over the Crimean peninsula.
Students at Sunduck High School suggested an environmentally friendly solution that could tackle the issue of the negative effects of plastic garbage on the marine ecosystem. Based on their results of an experiment on the development of Galleria mellonella - a moth that can decompose plastics - with various enzymes and enzyme-inducing microorganisms, the team claimed that plastic degradation enzymes could be used to minimize environmental problems.
A first-year student at Busan International Foreign Language High School presented a research paper on the issue of social exclusion experienced by teenage workers who work for mobile platforms such as delivery apps. “Platform companies should contribute to social innovation by fulfilling their social responsibility for the future labor force and promoting shared economic development,” he said, emphasizing their duty to expand the mobile platform market.
Seniors at Chadwick International School in Songdo discussed socio-economic problems that can occur during the process of developing a new city, focusing on Songdo International City (formally known as Songdo International Business District). They identified and addressed two problems of the new Songdo by adopting the preliminary research study method, using data in academic literature and press releases, and the field survey method as their main research method.

“The goal of the Institute for Higher Education Innovation is to nurture warm-hearted social innovators who strive to address issues in society,” said Yongseok Chang, Deputy Director of IHEI at Yonsei University. “We hope to instill and spread social innovation values to our youth and increase awareness through their experience.”
“We believe that Korea Scholar's Conference for Youth provides opportunities for young people to proactively come up with ideas that can impact society and create positive values,” said a KSCY Organizing Committee member. “It serves as a turning point for teenagers to develop into social innovators who care.”
