Yonsei University President Yong-Hak KimYonsei University continues to develop its institutional partnership with the University of Sydney, having recently signed a new Strategic Partnership Agreement to further strengthen collaboration in research, teaching, and student and faculty mobility.
On April 5, the University of Sydney Vice-Chancellor Michael Spence and Yonsei University President Yong-Hak Kim met at Yonsei’s main Sinchon campus in Seoul, Korea to sign the agreement. Under the three-year partnership, the two universities will continue its Global Strategic Matching Fund program - where each university contributes annual matching funds of up to 25 million KRW (about A$30,000) for faculty-led joint research projects - and strengthen academic exchange and research collaboration across a wide spectrum of academic fields to address global and regional issues.
The agreement signing ceremony was part of the University of Sydney delegation’s full-day visit to Yonsei University, which began with the Yonsei-Sydney Workshop on Nanoscience and Applications jointly hosted by Yonsei’s Office of Research Affairs and Office of International Affairs to promote collaboration in nanoscience research. Representatives from each university gave presentations on the latest developments in their individual research projects and at their research institutes followed by discussions among workshop participants.

The workshop was followed by a business lunch, tours and meetings at Y-IBS Institute and Yonsei Enterprise Support Foundation, and ended with a dinner at the President’s Residence Reception Hall on campus, with guests including Australian Ambassador to Korea James Choi and his spouse Joanne Lee.
The University of Sydney and Yonsei University have shared a long-lasting institutional partnership that has evolved successfully for nearly three decades. The first formal Memorandum of Understanding dates back to 1993 and the two universities have officially sent and received over 100 exchange students since 1996. Throughout the years, relations have developed to become a vibrant, multi-faceted partnership that includes collaboration in student and faculty mobility, dual degree programs between the Colleges of Engineering and Science, and joint research. The two universities also collaborate in multi-institutional initiatives and projects as fellow Association for Pacific Rim Universities (APRU) member institutions. Under the framework of the new Yonsei-Sydney Strategic Partnership agreement established in 2015, the two universities initiated the Global Strategic Matching Fund program to facilitate seed funding of faculty-led joint research projects across all academic fields. Since its launch, the program has supported 12 joint research projects in various fields including engineering, physics, aerospace, mathematics, social policy, education, economics, and international relations. Project themes have ranged widely, from developing energy systems in small island countries to studying multi-scale modeling of reactive materials.
