Exploring Taekwondo and Engineering during my Summer at Yonsei

Yonsei International Summer School student Jorge from ITESO (Mexico)

Name: Jorge Eloy Leon Orozco

Home University: ITESO (Mexico)

Major: Industrial Engineering

"I was first introduced to taekwondo from my father when I was four years old. I had practiced for 12 years – I currently have a black belt. Taekwondo shaped me to be who I am now, and it was the reason how I became so interested in Korea. I considered studying abroad at Yonsei because of its notable history, and a friend recommended the Yonsei International Summer School (YISS) because of the quality of the curriculum and engaging professors.

As an Industrial Engineering major, I studied growth and quality in Korea. Major Korean companies are recognized all over the world because of the quality of their manufacturing systems, continuous technological improvements, and system innovation. My Supply Chain Strategies course helped me apply the principles of industrial engineering to supply chain management, and my professor motivated me to consider pursuing a master’s degree in the area.

I learned a lot about the history of Korea and Yonsei in my Contemporary Korean Culture class, as I knew nearly nothing about Korea before, only taekwondo. I also traveled to many places in Korea. I went to the city of Busan, visited a Buddhist shrine, and hiked the famous mountain Seoraksan. The atmosphere you can feel in such places is very relaxing and enjoyable. I also visited the taekwondo museum and the Olympic Games venues - it was amazing to learn about the history of the sport in its home country.

During my summer at Yonsei, I learned to focus on my goals. It is amazing how Yonsei students pursue their dreams and ambitions, and they work very hard to achieve them. Another thing I learned was to be friendly and easy-going with others and to be helpful even if you do not understand the language well."
