A Yale University undergraduate majoring in biomedical engineering, Juliana Rios Chen maximized her Yonsei International Summer School (YISS) experience last summer with a YISS research internship at the Center for Evolutionary Nanoparticles (Professor Jinwoo Cheon), where she gained a deeper understanding of nanomedicine for better imaging and therapeutics dimensional nanomaterials.

Name: Juliana Rios Chen

Home University: Yale University

Major: Biomedical Engineering

“My summer at Yonsei was the perfect combination of pursuing research and having fun. My lab internship at the Center was well-structured, with rotations of each part of the lab: nanomachines, nanomaterials, and nano-imaging. I did a variety of tasks on a weekly basis, from synthesizing nanoparticles to transferring cells, and I also learned in detail about nano-instruments such as the transmission electron microscope. In the nano-imaging rotation, I got to see how we could use nanoparticles as contrast agents and also saw a mouse in an MRI, which was interesting.

The groups were small, so I was able to gain first-hand experience in every part of the lab. I learned many important lab skills that I can apply anywhere and specifically with nanoparticles. I received encouraging feedback from my Korean mentors, so I felt more confident and became more proactive doing lab work. I was so proud of myself when I first succeeded in transferring living cells. I wanted to work in a lab at Yale in the future, so this internship was the perfect opportunity for me to acquire the key skills that labs require from students and be more prepared as an aspiring candidate.

On a personal level, I was able to improve my communication and interpersonal skills, and I gained the confidence to pursue more challenges and try new things, so I think this experience will make me happier when I am in the lab. I love the friends I made at my internship program. My group was amazing; they took me out to eat Korean food and have fun (karaoke!) at interesting places, teaching me so much about Korean culture. All in all, I thoroughly enjoyed my summer experience at Yonsei.”
