"On the Frontlines of Hunger: the World Food Programme Experience"
Special lecture by Corinne Fleischer, Regional Director of WFP Regional Bureau for the Middle East, Northern Africa, and Eastern EuropeOn September 16, the Institute for Global Engagement & Empowerment (IGEE) at Yonsei University held a "GEEF for ALL Series II" special seminar under the theme of "On the Frontlines of Hunger: the World Food Programme Experience."
The event began with introducing the speakers by Professor Song In Han, Vice President for Student Affairs and Services and Director of the Ban Ki-moon Center for International Cooperation at IGEE. Corinne Fleischer, Regional Director of World Food Programme (WFP) Regional Bureau for the Middle East, Northern Africa, and Eastern Europe, Richard Ragan, Country Director of WFP Yemen Country Office, and Ally Raza Qureshi, Country Director of WFP Iraq Country Office, participated as speakers to present WFP's food security activities and answer questions from the audience.

Regional Director Corinne Fleischer expressed concern about the vicious cycle of rising aid procurement costs due to global economic inflation. Stressing the seriousness of the hunger problem caused by the ever-worsening famine, Fleischer said that Korean society, including Yonsei University, should actively contribute to the international community based on its successful experience in developing from an original recipient to a donor nation. In addition, the country directors of the Yemen and Iraq offices shared deep and professional views on solving the global food crisis based on their long field experiences.
The event was held as an online and offline hybrid, and various Yonsei community members, including professors, staff, and students, participated in comprehensive and in-depth questions, including WFP's food procurement system, to cope with the food crisis in the Middle East.

In particular, the IGEE, established in 2017, holds the international-scale Global Engagement & Empowerment Forum on Sustainable Development (GEEF) in February every year to raise global awareness of the importance of sustainable development.
The GEEF for ALL Special Seminars, which are being held in the series, is designed to draw continuous participation and interest from the international community by delivering more innovative messages through the GEEF platform. Since the first seminar on May 10, 2021, under the theme of "Human Rights and Peace of Myanmar," the series has consistently drawn various discourses to achieve the international community's Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).Following the hosting of the second series of GEEF for ALL with the WFP Seoul Office on July 7, the IGEE of Yonsei University has continued to form a form for global food security and community cooperation. "GEEF for ALL" will continue to explore various problems and solutions in the international community.
