- Yonsei University Hosts the First "6G Open Hub" Center September 13, 2022

Establishing a R&D Center for 6G Technology, in Partnership with NI of the United States
6G Open Hub MOU Signing CeremonyOn September 7, Yonsei University in Seoul, South Korea, announced that it would host the "6G Open Hub" with NI (National Instruments, CEO Eric Starkloff) of the United States.
The Republic of Korea government selected the 6G technology as one of the national strategic technologies last December. Communication infrastructure, an essential basis for social and industrial development by evolving generations every ten years, is an important technology that determines national competitiveness and technological hegemony. The new ROK government, launched last May, also recognizes the importance and promises to fully sponsor to demonstrate the world's first 6G technology in 2026.
Since 2010, NI has operated lead user programs with world-renowned institutions such as Intel, Nokia, AT&T, Meta (formerly Facebook), Stanford University, UC Berkeley, UT Austin, and New York University, and Yonsei University participated for the first time in Asia. Yonsei University, along with NI, introduced key mobile communication technologies such as full-duplex system, mmWave lens antenna system, and wireless haptic system on international stages such as Mobile World Congress and IEEE Globecom.
Based on its achievements, NI decided to establish the 6G Open Hub at Yonsei University as a representative research center in the Asia-Pacific region. It plans to donate a total of 5 billion won in kind and invest fully to demonstrate 6G technology. In addition, NI's authorized distributor Nubicom will support research projects and technology development activities of the 6G Open Hub.

With Yonsei University at the core, the 6G Open Hub will be participated by many institutions such as Hanyang University (Professor Sunwoo Kim), POSTECH (Professor Wonbin Hong), 5G/6G parts company SensorView (CEO Byeong-nam Kim), Tsinghua University (Professor Linglong Dai) of China and SUTD (Professor Tony Quek) of Singapore. In the future, it plans to expand not only to the Asia-Pacific region but also to universities in Europe and the Americas.
Professor Chae Chan-Byoung, an Underwood Distinguished Professor at Yonsei University's School of Integrated Technology, will be in charge of the 6G Open Hub. The 6G Open Hub will make the most of each university's strengths to create synergy by sharing development know-how. Professor Chae has won the best thesis awards six times and the best demo awards at the most prestigious journals and academic conferences of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) and has been selected as an IEEE Fellow in 2020.

Yonsei University's technical and educational capabilities will be greatly strengthened through the 6G Open Hub," said President Seoung Hwan Suh of Yonsei University, "Yonsei will also fully support to foster convergent talents based on 6G and AI."
"6G will be a key technology that determines future industrial competitiveness along with artificial intelligence," said Vice President Joseph Soo of NI, "Active industry-academic cooperation is needed to prepare for this future society. We will continue supporting human resources development that contributes to future industries through the 6G Open Hub."
