Yonsei Freshmen Starter Pack: Textbooks, Laptop, and Adobe Creative Cloud

Yonsei University in Seoul, Korea is giving the freshman class a true edge in creativity and digital skills by providing Adobe Creative Cloud - an optimal set of design and editing software acknowledged by creative professionals - since 2018. One of Yonsei University’s top priorities is to implement innovative education that will nurture leaders of the fourth industrial revolution with the digital competency to freely design and utilize creative content.

At 2018 February Matriculation, President Yong-Hak Kim announced that Yonsei will give Adobe Creative Cloud membership to all freshman undergraduates — a first in Asia. Based on a strategic MOU with Adobe established in June 2017, the entering class can boost their creative talent by using Adobe Creative Cloud apps and services via a variety of platforms and devices.

During their first year on campus, the freshman class will get the opportunity to experience both the Residential College (RC) educational program as well as the Adobe Cloud solution-based creative hub. This meets the new “bring your own device” educational environment and thus students can commence school life at the digitalized RC campus.

Yonsei University will continue to secure the foundation for new converged education and actively help students create and exchange content globally. The University will develop the curriculum and academic system so that all students can boost their digital literacy skills regardless of department or major. Yonsei plans to open new courses such as creative writing and visual storytelling, and will design a “Digital Creative Campus” by opening the Yonsei Digital Experience Center (Y-DEC) to hold various events and develop new programs.

“The importance of content writing and visual storytelling cannot be stressed enough,” said President Kim. He led by example, using the storytelling tool Adobe Spark to create and deliver a personal admissions letter to freshmen. “We invite you to find your expressive power with Adobe Creative Cloud, a window to the digital world and creative cloud space.”

“In the future, soft skills such as sociability, empathy, and consideration for others will be a greater source of competitiveness than memorization or information,” said President Kim at Matriculation. “A good student is a critical thinker who can constantly throw creative questions rather than answer difficult questions.”

Meanwhile, the Adobe Creative Cloud package provides a variety of graphics and video tools used as standard expression languages in the digital industry, including Photoshop CC, Lightroom CC, Premiere Pro CC, and Acrobat, which are also necessary for many fields of study. This cloud-based membership service enables students to create and collaborate with their creative output anywhere and anytime on multiple devices. Furthermore, every new feature gets automatically updated, so students can always access cutting-edge technology and tools.

President Kim and Paul Robson, President of Adobe’s Asia Pacific region, had thoroughly examined the education system together and discussed future plans well in advance of implementation.

“Through our industry-leading cloud platform, we will actively support Yonsei students to freely showcase their creative abilities and enjoy a richer learning experience,” said Robson. “As global companies gravitate towards an experience-based business, the need for creative talent with digital competency will grow even more. I am glad that Adobe is partnering with Yonsei to strengthen the development of digital skills for protagonists of the future industry.”
