As the mornings get colder with the upcoming winter chill, it is getting harder for Yonsei students to climb out of bed and energize for the day's busy schedule. For those who need a hearty breakfast more than ever, student-led English monthly The Yonsei Annals has done the thinking for you.
Student reporters have chosen six best breakfast spots near Yonsei University’s main (Sinchon, Seoul) and International (Songdo, Incheon) campuses that you can visit with sleepy eyes. Go and grab that breakfast and run to your lecture halls with big smiles and full stomachs.

Mother in Law Bagels

Although everyone is familiar with the breakfast favorite—coffee and a crispy bagel with cream cheese—Mother in Law’s (마더린러) bagels are an upgrade from the classic breakfast option. Instead of limiting your choices to plain cream cheese, Mother in Law has a unique range of bagel spreads such as smoked salmon cream cheese, cranberry almond, cinnamon walnut, and chocolate chip.
Moreover, Mother in Law is famous for its breakfast specialties, which include bagels fused with breakfast sandwich ingredients such as bacon, cheese, ham, eggs, and more. If you’re looking for a fast and filling breakfast on the go, Mother in Law’s bagels are available at only 5,000-8,000 won. It will remind you of the warm breakfasts your mother has made, and hopefully, your future mother-in-law will prepare them for you someday, too.

Luckily, they can always grab tasty morning meals even well past 10 a.m. in New York B&C (뉴욕비앤씨), a restaurant/shop that provides breakfast and brunch dishes all day as well as baked goods and Italian style groceries. The aroma of freshly baked bread and brewed coffee are the first to welcome hungry and sleepy customers, as the sunlight passing through the glass ceiling lights up their mornings.
New York B&C also features a library that book lovers can enjoy with a warm cup of coffee or a refreshing glass of lemonade. So, if you are looking for some breakfast without the hassle of waking up early, New York B&C is the place to go.

Breakfast is something college students do not usually enjoy, mainly because it is time and energy-consuming. Luckily La Fattoria (라파토리아), a pasta-steak-pizza restaurant located on the Myeongmul-gil leading from Yonsei University’s Main Gate, is open from 10 a.m. for those craving a quick bite before late morning classes. From morning coffee to light meals, La Fattoria offers ricotta cheese salad, bulgogi* soft baguette sandwich, and fresh fruit pancakes. If you are indecisive, you can order the Assorted brunch plate, where you will be met with a mishmash of toast, salad, omelet, bacon, and wedge potato fries. Relish the meals with ades, natural tea, or organic juices of all kinds. The ambiance is a 5/5 and the taste, a 6/5. So, go ahead and visit La Fattoria on your way to class—you may even become a morning person.

Café Grow (그로우) is famed for its green tea latte, which is a perfect ensemble with the Caprese sandwich. This establishment also has a wide array of salads for customers to choose from, starting with light, vegetable-based salads such as banana salads to the more filling ones like pork belly plates.
It is not just the sumptuous menus but also the bright and relaxing ambiance that makes this tranquil café a Songdo it-place. Green pot plants hanging from ceilings and glass windows surrounding the entire shop perfect the illusion of enjoying a picnic inside a greenhouse. Craving a lazy morning on your gong-gang*? Well then, Café Grow is the place to go.

Located right in front of Campus Town, Sandria(샌드리아) is a convenient place to grab a quick breakfast. Not only does Sandria sell a variety of sandwiches to choose from, the store also opens at 9 a.m., welcoming students early in the morning. The restaurant is perfect for eating breakfast alone as it has a quiet atmosphere and is often uncrowded, especially in the morning. Sandria’s sandwiches are full of different ingredients that create a hearty breakfast to keep you full until lunchtime. You can order at the counter or use the kiosk machine. A tip I would like to give is to order set menus, as they are sold at discounted prices and come with a drink that helps wash down your breakfast. If you are looking for a place to eat breakfast near YIC, Sandria is just around the corner.

Chung-gi-wa Gam-ja-tang

On the second floor of Campus Town Avenue, there is Chung-gi-wa (청기와 감자탕), a 24-hour Korean guk-bap* restaurant. Since it remains open even in early mornings, Chung-gi-wa is a restaurant that provides convenience for people who are busy to have a filling meal before they start their day or have the perfect Korean hangover to end the preceding night. The menu varies from pork rib hangover soup** to sun-dae guk-bap***, and even pork cutlet. You will find the pork rib hangover soup here rich in nutritious meat and taste despite its low price. The price of the soups ranges from 7,000 won to a maximum of 38,000 won for a big pot. You can also add more meat into your soup by paying an additional 12,000 won for some of the dishes. If you are looking for a place to eat early breakfast, why not stop by at Chung-gi-wa and have a hearty breakfast?
