How Studying Asian History at Yonsei Encouraged me to Pursue Postgraduate Studies

Yonsei International Summer School student Lisa-Marie from Lund University (Sweden)

Name: Lisa-Marie Borne

Home University: Lund University (Sweden)

Major: Business Administration and Economics

"As a German studying in Sweden, I learned a lot about the history of Europe and how the past century has shaped contemporary Europe - the societal structures of our countries, the notable existence of the European Union, and complex relations of our economies. However, I have never studied anything for other continents, especially Asia. With my curiosity for Asian history and its effects on Asia’s modern society, I came to study at Yonsei International Summer School. My Contemporary East Asia: Peace, Prosperity and Integration course helped me explore a side of the world that I had little knowledge about. Back home, I only learned about the effects of World War II in Europe, but during this class, I had the opportunity to study its aftermath in Asia as well. Also, I gained insight into why East Asia is the way it is today - its complex and often highly tensioned international relations while the countries are so close to each other geographically.

History lessons in East Asia enabled me to develop insight into my major, Business Administration and Economics. Through YISS classes, I have learned how diverse and complex international relations can shape economics and affect multicultural as well as local businesses in work. I gathered that exploring the connections between history, economics, and business is something I want to further pursue for my graduate studies. If it hadn’t been for my experiences at YISS, I wouldn’t have thought of pursuing my academic field with an interdisciplinary approach.”
